Its significance relates to the findings supporting the theory&#x2019;s proposed mechanisms as to how a cognitive-behavioral intervention influences athlete appraisals (i.e., emotional orientation) of their emotions towards upcoming performance and the subsequent effect on actual performance. A number of applied implications for psychologists and coaches&#x2019; stress management goal setting practices with athletes are identified.
