Abstract: This paper provides a review of the literature pertaining to the role of the nurse in recognising and responding to clinical deterioration and emphasises the complex nature of rapid assessment and communication of clinical deterioration. the role of the nurse in this context should not be limited therefore to assessment and recording of physiological risk but focus on the skills required to undertake a rapid and effective assessment and communication of the patient's problems to the relevant medical team.
