Item Description: This paper continues our population level work and outputs on changes in children's cardiorespiratory fitness and BMI (fatness). Nearly 28000 children were included in the analysis of data between 1998 and 2010 and this represents the largest study of its kind that includes a homogenous group of children from one city. These findings are significant as they demonstrate continuing decrements in cardiorespiratory fitness even when in the latter years a plateau in BMI occurred. Further more recent literature also demonstrated the relationships between cardiorespiratory fitness and cariometabolic risk. The research methodologies used were rigorous at a population level and data were adjusted for known confounders: somatic maturation and indices of multiple deprivation. Fitness continued to decline even when data were corrected fro BMI,IMD and somatic maturityThe decline in CRF suggests children in the more recent SportsLinx cohorts may be at an increased risk of cardiometabolic illness in comparison with earlier cohorts.
