This paper was the first to describe the gas exchange, cardiovascular and fractional oxygen extraction response simultaneously in children. Furthermore, a novelty of the present paper was the comparison of trained and untrained children across three maturational groups. The design of the study was further enhanced by the comparison of two exercise modalities, one specific and one less specific to the training modality. This rigorous methodology allowed us to demonstrate significant central and peripheral influences of training status not previously found and allowed us to address an issue of considerable debate within the field in a comprehensive manner. |
